PROPERTIES:

VITAMIN B1(THIAMIN)

Thiamin is needed for carbohydrate metabolism and the proper function of the nervous system.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

Thiamine deficiency occurs when poorly processed fish meals are used, because they contain thiaminase enzyme.

  • Lethargy and head tremors may be noted.

  • A marked decrease in appetite. –

  • Poultry are susceptible to neuromuscular problems, resulting in impaired digestion, general weakness, star-gazing, and frequent convulsions.

  • Polyneuritis may be seen in mature birds.

  • Birds may sit on flexed legs and draw back their heads (star-gazing position).

  • Retraction of the head is due to paralysis of the anterior neck muscles.

  • The chickens lose the ability to stand or sit upright and topple to the floor, where they lie with heads still retracted.

  • Decrease in body temperature and respiratory rate.

  • Testicular degeneration may be noted, the heart may show slight atrophy and birds show severe anorexia.

  • Lose appetite lead to decrease in feed consumption .

VITAMIN B2 (RIBOFLAVIN)

Riboflavin is needed for energy metabolism, building tissue, and helps maintain good vision.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

  • The characteristic sign in the chick is “curled toe” paralysis and chicks walk on their hocks.

  • Other signs are stunting, diarrhea after 8-10 days and high mortality after 3 weeks.

  • Weak feather growth and the main wing feathers often appear disproportionately long.

  • In poults dermatitis and retarded growth occur followed by death.

  • Ducklings usually have diarrhea and stop growing.

  • Egg production and hatchability are reduced.

  • Embryonic mortality .

  • Hypertrophy in the main peripheral nerve trunks of young poultry.

  • Congestion and premature atrophy of the lobes of the thymus.

VITAMIN B3 (NIACIN)

Niacin is needed for energy metabolism, proper digestion, and healthy nervous system.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

Chicken convert tryptophan to niacin better than turkeys, ducks, pheasants, and goslings.

  • Severe metabolic disorders in the skin and digestive organs.

  • Loss of appetite, retarded growth, general weakness, and diarrhea.

  • Weight loss, reduced egg production and a marked decrease in hatchability.

  • Enlargement of the tibiotarsal joint, bowing of the legs.

  • Poor feathering, and dermatitis on the head and feet.

  • The tongue, oral cavity, and esophagus become distinctly inflamed “black tongue.”

  • Achilles tendon seldom slips from its condyles.

VITAMIN B5 (PANTOTHENIC ACID)

Pantothenic acid is the prosthetic group of coenzyme A, an important coenzyme involved in many reversible acetylation reactions in carbohydrate, fat, and amino acid metabolism (energy metabolism).

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

The major lesions of pantothenic acid deficiency involve the nervous system, the adrenal cortex, and the skin.

  • Reduced egg production, drop in hatchability.

  • Retarded growth and high mortality.

  • Embryos from hens with pantothenic acid deficiency suffer from subcutaneous hemorrhages and severe edema.

  • Embryonic mortality during the later part of the incubation period.

  • Poor feathering and dermatitis in the feet, corners of the beak and the area below the beak .

  • Cornify of the feet skin and wart-like lumps occur on the balls of the feet.

  • Foot problem often leads to bacterial infection.

  • Liver atrophy and faint to dirty yellow color may be noted.

  • Nerve fibers of the spinal cord may show myelin degeneration.

  • Chicks show lymphoid cell necrosis in the bursa of Fabricius and thymus, together with lymphocytic paucity in the spleen.

VITAMIN B6 (PYRIDOXINE)

Vitamin B6 is essential for integrity of the connective tissue matrix, it is needed for protein metabolism and cell growth.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

  • Retarded growth, dermatitis, and anemia.

  • Dietary protein is not well utilized and thus nitrogen excretion increases.

  • Increased iron levels and decreased copper levels are noted in the serum, and iron utilization appears to be markedly decreased.

  • Anemia noted in ducks but is seldom seen in chickens and turkeys.

  • Nervous movements of legs when walking, spasmodic convulsions and the chicks may run aimlessly finally death.

  • Reduced appetite, leading to reduced egg production and a decline in hatchability. Severe deficiency can cause rapid involution of the ovary, oviduct, comb, and wattles, and of the testis in cockerels.

VITAMIN B9 (FOLIC ACID)

Folic acid has important roles in poultry growth, feather development and in the production of red blood cells.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

  • Decrease growth rate .

  • Poor feathering and depigmentation in colored feathers

  • Decrease egg production, hatchability and increase embryonic mortality.

  • Waxy white comb and pale mucous membranes.

  • Skeletal deformities.

  • Macrocytic (megaloblastic) anemia and leukopenia.

  • Damage in liver parenchyma and depleted glycogen reserves.

  • Neck becoming stiff and extended In turkey because of cervical paralysis.

  • High mortality rate.

VIT B12 (CYANOCOBALAMIN )

Vitamin B12 is an essential part of several enzyme systems, with most reactions involving the transfer or synthesis of methyl groups, the most important function of vitamin B12 is in the metabolism of nucleic acids and proteins, it also functions in carbohydrate and fat metabolism, red blood cells, and normal function of nervous tissue.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

  • Decrease weight gain and feed intake.

  • Poor feathering and nervous disorders.

  • Anemia, gizzard erosion and fatty infiltration of the heart, liver, and kidneys.

  • Decrease egg size, hatchability and increase embryonic deaths.

VITAMIN K3

Vitamin K3 is essential for blood coagulation.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

  • Massive haemorrhages anywhere on the body, but particularly on the breast, wings and legs.

  • Anaemia and a reduction in bone marrow.

  • Bleeding to death can occur from a minor injury.

  • Decrease hatchability and embryonic mortality after 18 day of incubation.

CHOLINE

Choline and its metabolites are needed for three main physiological purposes: structural integrity and signaling roles for cell membranes, cholinergic neurotransmission (acetylcholine synthesis), and a major source for methyl groups via its metabolite.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMES

  • Fatty degeneration of the liver and hemorrhagic kidney necrosis.

  • Decrease growth rate and perosis.

  • Decrease in egg production and hatchability.

  • In swine decrease growth rate, uncoordinated movements, reduced number of total and live pigs per litter, fatty degeneration of the liver and kidney damage.
